The mechanic said that I need a new carburetor

A carburetor problem is either simple to fix or very complicated. If your mechanic said you need to replace the carburetor, most likely there is something wrong with it and it would be very time consuming to fix. The best solution is to just replace it.

How much should a valve job cost, and why?

Besides the obvious of parts and labor, a valve job can actually be relatively inexpensive or very expensive. A simple valve replacement can cost, at the very least, starting at $600. On the other hand, if you have an expensive imported car you could easily be looking at several thousand dollars.

How do I know if a V-belt needs to be replaced?

Look at your belts in your car. An easy way to tell if you need any new belts is by inspecting them over. If any of your belts are full of tiny cracks, frayed, missing pieces of rubber, or has any signs of peeling rubber or any other damage it definitely needs to be replaced right away. Also, if any belts are shiny or glazed over you need to replace the belt right away. Any of these signs are an indication of wear and can weaken the belt, leading the belt to break.

Visual inspection is great for finding any immediate problems, but belts are also known to break without showing any troubling signs. Knowing the mileage and age of any belts in your car is very useful when determining if you should replace a belt before it breaks.
